The Seaside Village of Ancient Epidavros
EpidavrosVillage.jpg

Lazy days can be spent sunbathing around the large pool, swimming in the Aegean at the many nearby beaches, indulging in all kinds of water sports, snorkling over an ancient sunken city, taking strolls around the immense grounds, observing the workings of the agricultural estate or visiting a host of important ancient sites. Evenings of summer theatre and music are spent under the stars at the two ancient amphithetres of Epidaurus

The heated pool, enormous fireplaces, underfloor heating, well-stocked shooting grounds, horse stabling, extensive riding and hiking trails and accessability to Athens make the estate an ideal retreat for the cooler seasons as well as summer.

Epidaurus itself is home to two of Greece's Ancient Wonders

The Large Theatre at Epidavros

Epidaurustheatre.jpg

Epidavros, amidst the blue of the Saronic Gulf, well protected on its own smaller gulf of Epidavros, with the scent from the valley's orange blossoms meeting the sea breeze, with pine trees descending its slopes to offer their shade to its beautiful beaches, Epidavros, traditional yet modern, both tranquil and cosmopolitan, is always ready to welcome travellers whatever the season.

We are situated midway along the east coast of the Argolida district, easy to reach by road via Athens-Corinth Canal main highway or the scenic routes from Nafplion or Ermiono-Kranidi country roads or by sea aboard a ferry or Flying Dolphin from Piraeus.

Its sheltered location and natural surroundings, the beauty of the landscape and fertility of the soil, attracted not only men but also gods. It was here that Asklepios' most splendid sanctuary was situated. Here yet another important nucleus of ancient Greek civilization was created, a renowned sanctuary, to which the physically and mentally sick resorted for 1000 years to seek a cure, is situated amidst olive, pine and citrus trees and is surrounded by the sparkling blue sea.

Corinth

Corinth.jpg

Corinth is an ancient city about 48 miles west of Athens on the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece. Corinth was an important city in ancient Greece and it played a major role in the missionary work of the Apostle Paul. Today, Corinth is the second largest city in the Peloponnese with several sites of interest to pilgrims and tourists.

Nauplion

Nafplion.jpg

Cupped into the northern corner of the Argolic Gulf, Nauplion is almost can't-believe-your-eyes pretty. Yet although it was modern Greece's first capital after the country was liberated from the Turks in 1828, it's the Venetian occupation of the 14th and 17th centuries that have left their biggest stamp on the town. You only have to look around to clock the Italianate legacy. Tall, neo-classical mansions stud the streets. Elegant marble-paved squares glint in the sunlight. Balconied houses tuck themselves along cobbled alleyways peppered with bright bougainvillea and Turkish wall fountains. And church bells ring out down palm-lined avenues. Along from the bustling portside, a modern promenade curves round the bay, providing the perfect vantage point for Nauplion's killer relic - the mighty Palidi fortress. Sitting on a high outcrop, its splendid stone walls thread around the rocky hills, creating a soul-stirring sight. There's more to come too. Once you've stopped craning your neck, cast your eyes across the bay. In the middle of the dazzling harbour backed by distant green mountains, another 17th century Venetian fortress stands. The Bourtzi rises from a small islet - a smaller, romantic reminder of the republic's rule. Yet don't think this picture-postcard place is overrun by tourists. OK, it's buzzing with life and people, but also a sense of unchanged Greece. And that's good news. Because you might just feel that you've been let in on a very special secret.
